   アレクサンドロスがペルシア領であるリュディアの州都ゴルディオンを占領した時（紀元前333年）、町の中心にあるゼウス神殿に一台の古い戦車が祀られていた。その戦車は“ゴルディオスの結び目”と言われる複雑に絡み合った縄で結わえられており、「この結び目には解いたものがアジアの支配者になる」という伝説が伝えられていた。その伝説を耳にしたアレクサンドロスは腰の剣を振り上げ、一刀のもとに結び目を切断し、「運命とは伝説によってもたらされるものではなく、自らの剣によって切り拓くものである」と兵たちに宣言した。"
